Central Pier, opened in built in 1868,is situated close to the one time Central Railway station, now a car park, and North Pier, opened in 1863, is close to the Tower. North Pier won 2004 "Pier of the year" award (National Piers Society) and is a Grade II Listed Building.

The Promenade runs from Starr Gate to beyond North Pier, and is currently undergoing extensive renovation. The section between North and Central Piers is known as the "Golden Mile", and is home to Coral Island, the Doctor Who exhibition, and many Fun Arcades.
